Certified

Have you noticed the abundance of “certified” professions lately? While there are fields that should carry a certification (welders come to mind), some certifications aren’t worth the paper on which they’re printed.

A few weeks ago, a friend shared a link to a website where you could become “certified” as a Director of Operations. As I’ve worked in that area for decades, I thought it would be interesting to learn more. I first reviewed the video that explained what a “certified” Director of Operations would theoretically do in a typical day. Unfortunately, the job description was more Project Manager and experienced Executive Admin than my experience in Operations.

I also attended a webinar put on by one of the “certified” Directors of Operations and came away without any new knowledge. And I began to worry that harried business owners would be taken in by these “certifications”. Especially when one of the attendees stated she was going to be doing this work for a client soon and needed to learn how to execute.

Would you trust someone “certified” over another with proven experience”? Or a “certification” over a referral from a trusted source?

“Certifications” are a great way to add a badge to your LinkedIn profile, but without trusted and proven experience they should not be the sole decision maker for engaging with an outside professional. Your business and time are too valuable to be wasted on false promises.

Do your research before you engage any “certified” professionals. And, if you don’t have time, please reach out to me. I’ll do some research and tell you the truth about their “certified” value.
