Lean on Me

Do you have a support system? Do you need one?

Leadership is a lonely place, even more so when you’re an entrepreneur. It’s important to have people around you who can reinforce what you’re doing right and push back when they see something wrong.

A lot of business owners and leaders are so busy that they don’t review their decisions with a trusted group. And, if that trusted group is your leadership team, are they agreeing because they agree or are they afraid to speak up?

When someone pushes back on you, it’s not an insult. It’s an opportunity to pause and think through your decision. Why do they disagree? And why are you so certain that your way is the best way?

Support systems can help you regain confidence, push forward when things are tough, build you up when you feel down, and just help you keep going. But don’t disregard the people who disagree – they may be your biggest supporters.

And no, you don’t need to replace your leadership team. But you should seek out people who are willing to give you honest feedback, both good and bad. And you should open yourself up to receiving the same type of feedback from your employees.

Now that I’m an entrepreneur, I bounce ideas off a trusted group of friends and colleagues and trust them to give me their honest opinions. And when I worked inside companies, I would open myself up to feedback from my team and others to make sure I wasn’t pushing ahead with something that wasn’t beneficial.

Now ask yourself again – do you need a support system?
