What do people think of when they think about your business? Do you know your reputation?
I enjoy helping people and often give unsolicited advice (for better or worse). I’m always willing to meet with someone and discuss their problems. If they can improve their situation with some free advice, I’m happy to help. It’s probably why I’m involved in so many mentoring organizations.
Recently, I experienced a business owner who went above and beyond when I went to them for help. And this story is too heartwarming not to share.
I purchased a dress for an event less than a week before the event. It needed some basic alterations (shortening the straps), and I couldn’t take it to the tailor until a couple of days later. I searched “fast alterations near me” on Google and found a well-regarded option about five minutes from my house. I chose to go this route instead of my usual tailor because even in the best of times, he has a two-week turnaround time.
When I got to this new tailor, I waited in line for some other patrons to pay for their work. When it was my turn, I explained what I needed. She asked when I needed it and answered “Tuesday.” It was Friday afternoon. She apologized and said that she was out in mid-June with her work. Panicked because I didn’t know what to do, I asked if she could just pin the straps for me because I live alone and I would try to do the work myself.
She agreed and off to the dressing room I went. I came out in the dress, and she took the time to pin the straps to the correct length. I then went back into the dressing room and changed back into my regular clothes.
After I came out with my pinned dress, fully expecting to just thank her and head home, she took the time to show me exactly what to do so that I could do the work myself. She warned me not to open the back (did she think I was a master seamstress?!) and emphasized that I should only sew into the lining of the dress. She clearly showed me where to stitch the straps and marked the straps with her chalk to back up the pins she had previously put in the straps. She even pinned down one of the straps so all I had to do was start sewing.
After all this instruction, she went into the back and brought out matching thread to the lining of the dress (I was planning to use the best match I had at home). She proceeded to unroll enough thread for me to sew both straps and gave me a little extra.
I couldn’t believe the service I had received from this business! I was an unknown, new customer and she helped me fix my dress myself. I left there with an amazing experience and will be visiting her again – maybe even to get the dress done the right way.
